In The Now, Pt. 2

scifiwoman

So, by now you’ve had enough time to devour every last song on Pt. 1, amiright?!

Good, because this one’s even more extensive. I couldn’t help myself!

WOODS – “Moving to the Left”
There’s not too much I can say about this, other than stating the fact that it’s got a quiet, psychadelic perfection.

Sisyphus – “Rhythm of Devotion”
I am going to copy and paste the description from their Soundcloud here, because… it’s great. “Sisyphus is the new name for the collaboration between Serengeti, Son Lux, and Sufjan Stevens (formally s/s/s), whose new project under this moniker is a self-titled album partly inspired by the art of Jim Hodges, and commissioned by the Walker Art Center and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series in Minneapolis/Saint Paul.”
To add to that: this track is pure ecstasy. And: Sufjan Stevens!!! (So handsome.)

In The Valley Below – “Peaches”
Upon first seeing the title, I thought it was a Presidents of the United States cover! Even though that would have been EPIC, I’m glad it wasn’t. And isn’t. Because this can become a cult hit all on its own. Boom.

Gardens & Villa – “Colony Glen”
Synth. Synth synth synth. And some vocal patterns in arpeggio form. And then some more synth. Because it rules.

Elliphant – “Revolusion”
I love a little bit o’ estrogen mixed in with my production. This chick is a total effing BABE. OMG. I once read somewhere that she was hailed as the “twisted, illegitimate lovechild of M.I.A. and Diplo”. Do you agree? Mad. Decent.

Darkside – “Paper Trails”
Remember the days when blues guitar was a thing? Like, when BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughn just killed on some improv with their twangy stringed instruments? No no… I’m not comparing Darkside to the aforementioned legends. Let’s be realistic here. BUT. Do I love their influence? Their willingness to get outside of the box? ABSO-FRIGGING-LUTELY. The husky voice? Is just the cherry on top. On repeat.

CHVRCHES – “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”
So………. this is a Bauhaus cover. If you’re a diehard, I guess there’s a thing of either you love it or you hate it. IMHO — sometimes a remake can make the song. You know, like Marilyn Manson’s “Tainted Love”. It works better. And this is the case with this right here track. I said it. Now, I will patiently await the backlash.

Mac DeMarco – “Chamber of Reflection”
Kinda like Super Mario Bros. melting on acid. Yeah. That’s about right.

Sylvan Esso – “Hey Mami”
I’ve been meaning to review this album, which dropped waaaaaay back in May. I’ll get to it. But you need to hear this RIGHTNOWRIGHTNOW. Go dance. Get wild. Genius. AND YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT! WHAAAAAA?!

XXYYXX – “Fields”
This is at least a year old. But that’s ok. Just listen to that Amy Winehouse sample!!! (“You Know I’m No Good“) May she rest in Peace. Quite the tribute.

Honeyblood – “Killer Bangs”
Sik Lady Rock that hearkens of anthem days past. In LOVE, in love, in love. Other artists could learn a thing or two from this duo.

Real Estate – “Crime”
So Chill and Effortless that it kinda makes me sick. I don’t imagine I’d like these guys if I met them IRL, just ’cause I like a little bit of edge, but I dig their sound. And that’s all that matters right now.

Speedy Ortiz – “American Horror”
Más female power. Yes. So angsty! So ’90s! So good!
DOWNLOAD and share the wealth.

Afghan Whigs – “Matamoros”
There’s a Matamoros restaurant in San Antonio that is nowhere near as badass as this tune is. If it were, I’d go there. Everyday. The little guitar riff kinda reminds me of The Walking Dead… anyone else? I mean, that just seals it.
DOWNLOAD. Yes.

Parquet Courts – “Black & White”
This band is polarizing. You’re either going to love them, or you’re going to hate them. I loved them from the get go, after hearing “Stoned and Starving”… and then I missed them at ACL last year and was extremely bummed. I WILL see them live one day! There’s simply no denying this track, though. It’s fun! You wanna go run around and create some chaos, don’t you?! Punk isn’t dead. Dammit.

Alt-J – “Hunger of the Pine”
HOLY MOTHEREFFING YESSSSSSSSSSSS. Remember the Instagram post I made of this? Because I couldn’t wait to tell the world that Alt-J is releasing NEW STUFF?! Yeah, so what I said then rings true now. I have never been happier to hear Miley Cyrus. EVER. Miley can seriously suck it, but I LOVE this sample. And I love Alt-J for geniusly incorporating it. Their producer’s ear is superb. I wanna hug them all.

Lo-Fang – “When We’re Fire”
I have to give credit where credit is due: My friend turned me onto this band, and I could not be more grateful. Like, he’s all over them, and I’m still asking “Who’s this?!” (excitedly, duh) whenever it comes on and we’re hanging out. Listen to that silky smooth voice! Listen to the innovation! “I’m a person, not a concept.” Dope.

Young Money – “Senile” ft. Nicki Minaj, Tyga, & Lil Wayne
Unexpected? GOOD. This shizz is next level. Different. Dark. Sik. If only all hip hop was this damn quality.

Antlers – “Hotel”
Perfect for a rainy day in a bubble bath, y’all. Try it. You will FEEL your blood pressure drop. 😉

TV On the Radio – “DLZ”
Dawn of the Lozer Forever. (Yes, I’m aware I misspelled it.) There’s something really fun about grown men singing “La la la lalala”… But this is not a fun track. It’s driving and tough. It’ll make you feel like a badass when you roll your window down and blare it at a stoplight. At night. In a really nice neighborhood. Because who doesn’t wanna feel like a badass with minimal risk. Have fun.

Tennis – “Never Work for Free”
I have mad respect for any chick who can rock some seriously frizzy ’70s hair. She looks like she’s just stepped out of a time machine! And that voice?! Forget it. You’re gonna fall in love, just like I did a couple years ago. But her bandmate hubby may be jealous, lol. And this new material they’ve just released, in anticipation of their new LP “Ritual in Repeat” dropping on 9/9/14, is tops.

Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks – “Little Fang”
I must apologize to you all for sitting on this material for MONTHS, and I’m just now sharing it. Maybe I’m selfish. But this Animal Collective member knows what he’s doing. Thank you, Avey Tare. You’ve made my world a little brighter with this track.

Because Soundcloud is too lame to have anyone that’s shared it yet. DUDE! It’s like bursting into a meadow of flowy linens and flower children. Like a scene from a Monty Python film. Or the end of 40-Year-Old Virgin. Allow that to sink in.

I want to rant about something related to my wanting to share this track on Soundcloud, but will refrain, since it’s too damn crucial to ensure this track is done some justice. You heard the Jamie XX track in the last playlist… well, this is newest. And it’s the best yet. If you’ve ever seen the laughably godawful cult classic sequel that never should have been Speed 2, those metallic drums are going to take you right back to the cruise deck. Aaaaaaaaaand, if you were a fan of electronic music back in the day, the UK House Vibe you’re getting is spot-on. If you weren’t… then I feel sorry for you. Dat Baaaaaasssssssss.

Now go live life with your new, personal soundtrack in tow.
