The Playlist To Get You Up-To-Speed

PLAYLIST TIME! Once I get on a roll, I can’t be stopped. Aren’t you lucky?!

This playlist is not organized by style. It’s not thought-out. It’s simply a collection of insanely awesome sounds that you should definitely be aware of.

Courtney Barnett is an Oz that just reminds me so much of Suzanne Vega, who did Tom’s Diner way back in the day (you know, before I was born). All hail to her spoken story-telling. Refreshing. Watch the video! Not at all what I was expecting, and quite adorably so.

Mario Kart 64 and Aretha Franklin — WHAAAAA?! Dude, this track is epic. I mean, I even like the abrupt ending! I want more and it tells me “NO!” in the most awesome way possible. NO — you don’t want to spoil it! But did I also mention that Saint Pepsi is kind enough to grace us all with a free download?!

Welcome to road trip weather (since I still consider this hour a part of the first day of spring). Welcome to road trip music. Done right.

Road trippin’ continued, but emphasis on “trippin'”… Kinda makes me wanna live in the late 60s-early 70s and get a little stupid with those beloved hippies. But I won’t ever ACTUALLY get stupid because I’m a weenie. #layinthegrassandfeellikeurflying

Half Moon Run burst onto my radar when I had the privilege of seeing Metric at Emo’s in Austin in early December 2012. Seriously, the show was SO good that I actually remember the timeframe. ANYwho, this INSANELY talented Canada-based group can simply do no wrong in my book. This is their latest track. Do yourself a favor and also take a listen to their mothereffing AMAZEBALLS album here. Now. YOU. ARE. WELCOME.

Ohhhh… I can’t even believe it’s taken them 5 albums to catch my ear. This song is like friggin’ catnip to me right now. Honestly, the video and the style even remind me a bit of a darker version of Smashmouth — y’all remember them, right?! Anyway, LISTEN and love. This will be your new gettin’-ready-on-a-Friday-night track. CHANT IT! “That’s why they call me the Avocado Baby, uh huh!”

Know how I was all up on the Grizzly Bear remix that Diplo did in 2013???? UM, YEAH. 2014’s Best Hip Hop Sampler goes to… I CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THIS!

SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIK. I mean, #straightobsessing. I wouldn’t be surprised if this went mainstream, and I’d be surprised if it didn’t. It’ll be on some commercial someday. And I’ll do my best not to get all hipster about it.

How does one pronounce this artist’s name? Anyone know? Anyone care? Those GRANDIOSE harmonies, tho! Her shizz is out-of-this-world (which I think is what she was going for, uh duh) and I am interested to see what her full-length release will hold.

Oh, Songza… THANK YOU ever-so-much for introducing me to ASTR. How have I lived 11 months without hearing their dope beats??? #nevermore #saved

Goooooooooooooooooooey is right. This track is RICH, y’all. I mean, I wanna swim in it. Soulful, sticky, messy, crave-able. Baby-making music. If I even liked babies. Which I don’t. So thank God I don’t have to do anything while listening to this but enjoy the peanut butter reference and think about brioche French Toast from Max’s Wine Dive‘s brunch menu. (menu subject to change seasonally)

Doesn’t this make you wanna dance in your underwear?! (or is that just my obsession with Grey’s Anatomy talking???) Seriously, too much fun to be had with this one… Let your hair down and share it with a fun-loving friend IMMEDIATELY!

If I wasn’t such a weenie, man… I’d make the best pothead ever — I listen to the best druggie music! F’REAL. But I’ll just stick to getting high off this psychadelic chord progression, “wahhs” (in the background), and that driving beat. And I’m gonna go pick some daisies. In the meadow. At dusk. (lol — I’m a fan of good movies, too)

VENIVIDIVICIBISHES! ‘Nuff said.

This is my go-to of the moment. There’s something so serene and beautiful and haunting about this chick’s voice. Paired with a clever backdrop, it’s untouchable. It’s music to actually drink coffee to on a rainy, gray morning, cuddled up in your coziest sweater, with a good book, your beloved cat, and the one you love. This song turned my cynical ass into a damn romantic. That’s power, y’all.
SIDENOTE: This is one song I hope is never corrupted by becoming maintream. EVER. #hipsterout

BASS. BASS. BASS. Dark and lovely. This is what I think an emerging David Bowie would have sounded like had he just been getting his start today. It’s so reminiscent of my mental image of Ziggy Stardust. But apparently he doesn’t give a f***. LOVE!
